The setting for this afternoon tea was exquisite. A large, elaborate conservatory with a bar set in the middle and stunning views of the manicured gardens, a truly relaxing environment. The service began a little slowly; it took some time to get to our reserved seats and there was a further small delay before being asked for our drinks order but it was busy, and the service definitely improved thereafter as it became less busy.
The afternoon teas came out beautifully presented along with little side tables for the stands to go on, (as there was not enough room on the table for our 3 servings).
The sandwiches overall were very tasty, the cucumber sandwiches were a tad plain but the egg mayonnaise were scrumptious, and the smoked salmon on soda bread were extremely edible.
Next we tried the scones, they were unfortunately a bit dry but did come out warm and were accompanied by Madeira cake and some bread with raisins. The Madeira cake was very moreish! We did find though, because the bread and scones were difficult to resist, that when we moved onto the desserts we were quite full, so maybe there could have been a little less here (or a little more will power on our part!)..
Finally, - the best part, which I always find myself rushing towards, "the desserts". A great selection, from Chocolate tarts with a small amount of strawberry jam (which was fantastic) to Banoffee cake which was really lovely (and I'm not even mad on banana).
The passion fruit cake was yummy, and the chocolate brownie was just chocolatey enough. All the desserts were a very good size for an afternoon tea, and certainly didn't leave you wanting more.
All In all the desserts were lovely and ticked all the boxes for all tastes, the sandwiches were nice but nothing too adventurous so, for a classic afternoon tea, they were fine, and while the scones were just a little dry, the setting by far made up for this, - not quite city nor country but a great compromise and a very enjoyable day:)
An ideal venue for afternoon coffee or cocktails, the Orangerie Bar & Ballroom Lounge provides a serene view of the estate gardens. The accompanying Ballroom Lounge serves as the hotel’s centrepiece.
